Will search engines be replaced by AI? Examining the development of search and the emergence of AI

By Chico Mies.

The introduction of search engines significantly altered all human activities. I could never have thought a few years ago that I would never need to use a search engine to get information on any topic or for research purposes. It was standard procedure to fine-tune search phrases and titles and to turn pages to check if any of the results listed satisfied my demands. That has altered dramatically with AI.
Are search engines being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) as we stand on the cusp of yet another technological revolution?

Investigating the development of search engines, major figures in the industry, and the ways AI is positioned to revolutionise information retrieval is necessary to comprehend this change.

The early 1990s saw the rapid growth of technology and the spread of the internet, which is when search engines got their start. Jerry Yang and David Filo launched Yahoo in 1994, and it was one of the first search engines to become widely used.
Yahoo's directory-based strategy represented a big improvement over the basic search features that were previously available, enabling users to browse categories and identify relevant websites.

However, when Google was introduced in 1998, the scene underwent a significant shift. Google, which was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, revolutionised search with its PageRank algorithm, which assigned a page's ranking depending on the quantity and relevancy of backlinks. With the help of this creative strategy, Google shot to prominence and is now the most widely used search engine worldwide.

Google's ongoing innovation and service development served to further cement its supremacy. The user experience was improved with features like Google Scholar, Images, and Maps, while the company's search algorithms were improved by its investments in AI and machine learning. For billions of people worldwide, Google's goal to "organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" has come true.

Google continued to dominate the search market despite opposition from rival search engines including Microsoft's Bing, which debuted in 2009, and Yahoo's comeback. Although Bing provided a competitive alternative and was integrated into Microsoft's product line, its market share was never really threatened by Google. Once a leader, Yahoo subsequently lost ground and outsourced its search to Bing in 2009.
The technology underlying search engines also advanced with them. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changer, providing hitherto unseen powers in natural language comprehension, data processing, and contextual awareness. AI-driven digital assistants, such as Google Assistant, Amazon's Alexa, and Apple's Siri, have become an essential part of our digital lives, proving that AI has the power to completely transform information retrieval.

The most notable advancement in this field is the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models from OpenAI, which include the most recent version, GPT-4. These models can comprehend and produce writing that resembles that of a human, providing conversational answers and in-depth analysis that is difficult to find in regular search engines. The emergence of chatbots and virtual assistants driven by artificial intelligence (AI) heralds a change in information retrieval from keyword-based search to more natural and interactive methods.

NVIDIA is a major force behind the AI revolution. NVIDIA, which was first well-known for controlling the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, has used technology to its advantage to rise to the top of the tech industry. Because they have the processing capacity required tto train intricate AI models, their GPUs are the foundation of AI and machine learning applications.

NVIDIA has a significant impact on the AI industry. The company's GPUs fuel everything from AI research and development to data centres and driverless cars. NVIDIA is now the most valuable firm in the world as a result of this calculated strategy change, which reflects the reality of AI's supremacy in the tech sector. At the core of advancements that are changing industries and improving our daily lives is its AI-driven technology.
