A heartbreaking incident occurred yesterday in Ukubie, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, where a mother, Madam Stella, tragically took the life of her 6-year-old daughter, Rachael. According to Madam Stella, her daughter had a habit of bathing at the waterfront where they carried out their fishing activities.
Despite repeated warnings, Rachael often stayed in the water for extended periods and only left when scolded. Recounting the incident, Madam Stella said: “Yesterday, as usual, she went to the water, took her bath, but refused to leave despite numerous warnings. When she saw me approaching angrily, she ran out of the water.
In a fit of rage, I grabbed her hands and threw her into the deep water twice—until she drowned. I regret my actions deeply. Please, I beg for forgiveness; I never imagined it would end this way.”Expressing his grief, a family member, Jeph Nation, stated: “This year alone, I have lost two loved ones in my paternal family at Ukubie, but what happened yesterday was the most painful and tragic of all.
May their souls rest in peace.”This devastating incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
