Struggling 9mobile changes name

Nigeria’s fourth-largest telecom operator, 9mobile, has rebranded to T2 in a bid to revive its fortunes after years of decline.

The Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe, announced the new identity during an event in Lagos on Friday, describing it as “the dawn of a new era” for the brand.

“We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” Banigbe stated.

This is the company’s second rebrand in less than ten years, following its 2017 switch from Etisalat to 9mobile.

Despite the change, T2 remains the smallest player in Nigeria’s telecom market, with only 2.4 million subscribers—representing 1.42% of the country’s 171.73 million active telecom users as of June 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Over the past eight years, the firm has struggled with leadership instability, financial woes, and poor service delivery, with no clear turnaround achieved so far.
