Google Introduces AI Mode in Search Across Africa

Google has launched AI Mode on Search across Africa, a new feature designed to provide smarter, more comprehensive results powered by its Gemini 2.5 model. Unlike traditional search, which lists multiple links, AI Mode delivers a single, AI-generated response that interprets the user’s intent and tackles complex or multi-part queries.

The feature is available as a dedicated tab on Google Search and through the Google app on Android and iOS. Google explained that it is particularly helpful for exploratory tasks such as planning a trip or understanding complicated subjects.

AI Mode works through a method called query fan-out, which breaks down user questions into subtopics, issues multiple searches simultaneously, and then compiles the results into a detailed and relevant answer. To enhance usability, the feature also supports multimodal inputs, meaning users can search using text, voice, or by uploading images.

According to Google, this approach not only improves the accuracy of responses but also helps users discover diverse content. The AI-powered answers include visible links to sources, making it easy for users to access more information.

The company emphasized that AI Mode is integrated with its core ranking and quality systems, ensuring reliability, and promised continuous improvements as the feature expands across the continent.
