Rivers State LGA Chairmen being installed |
The 23 local government districts' freshly elected council chairs have been sworn in by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Adolphus Enebeli, gave the chairmen certificates of return, and the exercise took place on Sunday at the Executive Council Chamber of Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Following a high-strung exercise on Saturday, the Action Alliance candidate gained one seat and the Action Peoples Party won 22 of the 23 chairperson positions.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Fubara spoke to the newly appointed chairman and advised them to take a patient and calculated approach to governing, much like he did.
When elected officials return to work on Monday, the governor stated there are preparations to use violence against them.
On the other hand, Fubara cautioned the chairmen to use their election as a chance to serve the people on a local level.
"I'm aware that they are mobilising twenty people per unit to go and confront you when you return to your local government headquarters tomorrow," the speaker stated. “Please stay away from them if they are threatening violence”.
We value this state's peace much too much. Everyone is aware of their plans, but I humbly ask that they adopt my strategy.
"If you are patient and strategic, you will always come out on top at the appropriate moment. To our people, we have kept our word. They will follow us to the promised land.”
