Fufeyin: NAFDAC lacks the authority to oversee spiritual products -Bishops

By Chico Mies

Tuesday saw a group of more than seven Bishops leading protesters to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) office in Asaba, the capital of Delta State. Their aim was to urge NAFDAC to stop criticizing Senior Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin of the Christ MercyLand Deliverance Ministry in Abuja for his spiritual products.

Members from Fufeyin’s Church and various Christian denominations, regardless of the heavy rainfall, gathered at the NAFDAC office, holding placards with various messages to express their dissatisfaction with the agency's actions against Fufeyin.

The placards displayed messages such as, "Spiritual products have spiritual backing and do not need NAFDAC approval," and "When it comes to the spiritual realm, it deserves respect," among others.

Metropolitan Archbishop Samuel Baaba of the Charismatic Anglican Church of Nigeria, addressing the crowd, urged NAFDAC to be cautious when dealing with spiritual matters.

Baaba stated, "We are representatives of the divine and have gathered here in unity to convey a message to NAFDAC, urging them to refrain from intervening in spiritual matters.

"NAFDAC does not have the authority to oversee spiritual products. There are boundaries to what individuals can dictate, especially regarding matters of faith."

In addition, the Rector of the Union Theological Institute and Seminary in Port Harcourt, along with Evangelical Church representatives Calixtus and Most Celestine Ewurum, asserted that their primary focus was solely on spiritual items.

"To the best of my understanding, based on my review of the NAFDAC Act of 2004, I am not aware of any amendments that would authorize the regulation of spiritual products.

"NAFDAC cannot label products as counterfeit without conducting proper testing; it is crucial for NAFDAC to specify the issues associated with the water," they stated.

On Sunday, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, warned Nigerians about the activities of a faith-based organization, Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, led by Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, which is misusing the agency's name to mislead the public.

She emphasized that none of the products, including Miracle & Healing Water and River Jordan Water, have been registered with NAFDAC, urging the public to avoid purchasing any of these miracle products.
