Seplat Energy Plc has recorded a landmark achievement by supplying its first batch of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from the Bonny River Terminal (BRT) in Rivers State to Nigeria’s domestic market. The 12,600 metric tons of butane, loaded in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), marks a shift away from decades of exclusive export of BRT-produced gas under ExxonMobil.
The development is expected to ease Nigeria’s reliance on LPG imports, which currently account for over 70 percent of local demand, leaving households vulnerable to foreign exchange swings and rising global prices. Seplat’s initiative aims to improve energy security, reduce costs, and expand access to cleaner fuels.
CEO Roger Brown noted that “gas and LPG use are rising, and reliable supply is critical to energy security, reducing emissions, and improving public health.”
With two new gas plants in Imo and Delta States set to start operations in 2025, Seplat is reinforcing its gas-led strategy while supporting Nigeria’s Decade of Gas drive. The project is also expected to create downstream opportunities, curb deforestation, and provide millions of households with safer cooking alternatives.
