South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Expropriation Act 13 of 2020 into law, repealing the apartheid-era Act 63 of 1975. The new legislation allows for the expropriation of land without compensation, a move that has sparked significant international debate.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump strongly opposed the law, stating that “the U.S. will halt all funding to South Africa because of its treatment of certain classes of people.
In response, President Ramaphosa defended his government stance, emphasizing that South Africa is a constitutional democracy deeply rooted in the rule of law, justice, and equality. The South African government has not confiscated any land. Donald Trump should leave us alone.
With Trump’s firm stance on global affairs, diplomatic tensions could continue to rise, making the next four years a challenging period for international relations.
