Former President Goodluck Jonathan is actively lobbying behind the scenes for the reinstatement of suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with hopes rising that a resolution may come before Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, according to POLITICS NIGERIA.
Sources indicate Jonathan has already discussed the matter extensively with President Bola Tinubu, urging Fubara’s return in the “spirit of Democracy Day.”
Fubara, along with his deputy Ngozi Odu and several lawmakers, was suspended on March 18 following a controversial presidential directive, a move legal analysts have widely condemned as unconstitutional, noting that the presidency lacks the power to remove an elected governor.
The suspension followed intensifying tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. However, both parties appear to be softening their stances, signaling possible reconciliation.
While many expected Tinubu to act by May 29—his second year in office—attention has now shifted to June 12, which marks 26 years of democratic rule in Nigeria. By June 18, Acting Administrator Ibas will have served exactly three months since stepping in.
April saw initial signs of thawing relations when Fubara met Tinubu privately in London, followed by another meeting in Lagos. Public photos of the pair have sparked speculation of a pending resolution.
Fubara has recently called for calm among his supporters, praising Tinubu for his intervention—seen by insiders as a move to show loyalty to the president amid rumors of a possible alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of 2027.
Tinubu, reportedly valuing Fubara’s strategic relevance, has taken steps to protect him, including presenting Rivers State’s N1.4 trillion budget to the National Assembly, thereby shielding the governor from impeachment efforts.
Besides Jonathan, two other former presidents are said to be involved in the mediation effort, suggesting growing elite pressure to restore democratic normalcy in the state. Sources claim Fubara’s meetings with Tinubu followed discreet instructions from these power players, and signs point to a possible reinstatement before the six-month suspension ends in September.
