Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has made it clear that Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd.), head of the caretaker administration in Rivers State, is serving a temporary role aimed solely at restoring law and order.
This came as the House inaugurated a 21-member ad-hoc committee to oversee governance in Rivers State during the current State of Emergency. The committee, led by Rep. Prof. Julius Ihonvbere and Deputy Chairman Rep. Ali Isa J.C., includes several key lawmakers and was established following President Tinubu’s six-month emergency declaration on March 18.
Speaker Abbas, addressing the House, stressed the importance of this move in preserving constitutional governance and ensuring stability in the face of the crisis in Rivers. He invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that the emergency declaration demanded oversight from the National Assembly.
He reaffirmed that Ibas’ administration is not permanent and should strictly work to restore peace until democratic processes are back in place. The committee has been charged with maintaining oversight, ensuring federal policies are implemented, and supporting efforts to rebuild trust and order in the state.
Chairman Ihonvbere assured the public that the committee would carry out its mandate with fairness, integrity, and dedication, submitting regular updates and ensuring constitutional boundaries are respected.
